This article describes the user interface and access modes and commands associated with the operation of Cisco ASA 5500 firewall appliances. We assume that you know how to connect to the appliance using a console cable (the blue flat cable with RJ-45 on one end, and DB-9 Serial on the other end) and a Terminal Emulation software (e.g HyperTerminal), and how to use basic Command Line Interface.

A Cisco ASA security appliance has four main administrative access modes:

Monitor Mode:

Displays the monitor> prompt. A special mode that enables you to update the image over the network or to perform password recovery. While in the monitor mode, you can enter commands to specify the location of a TFTP server and the location of the software image or password recovery binary image file to download. You access this mode by pressing the “Break” or “ESC” keys immediately after powering up the appliance. Unprivileged Mode:

Displays the > prompt. Available when you first access the appliance. If the appliance is a Cisco PIX 500 series, the prompt for unprivileged mode is pixfirewall> and if the appliance is the new Cisco ASA 5500 Series, the prompt is ciscoasa>

This mode provides restricted view of the security appliance. You cannot configure anything from this mode. To get started with configuration, the first command you need to know is the enable command. Type enable and hit Enter. The initial password is empty, so hit Enter again to move on the next access mode (Privileged Mode).

ciscoasa> enable <-- Unprivileged Mode

password: <-- Enter a password here (initially its blank)

ciscoasa# <-- Privileged Mode Privileged Mode:

Displays the # prompt. Enables you to change the current settings. Any unprivileged command also works in this mode. From this mode you can see the current configuration by using show running-config. Still, you cannot configure anything yet until you go to Configuration Mode. You access the Configuration Mode using the “configure terminal” command from the Privileged Mode. Configuration Mode:

This mode displays the (config)# prompt. Enables you to change all system configuration settings. Use exit from each mode to return to the previous mode.

ciscoasa> enable <-- Unprivileged Mode

password: <-- Enter a password here (initially its blank)

ciscoasa# configure terminal <-- Privileged Mode

ciscoasa(config)# <-- Configuration Mode

ciscoasa(config)# exit

ciscoasa# exit <-- Back to Privileged Mode

ciscoasa> <-- Back to Unprivileged Mode

The (config)# mode is sometimes called Global Configuration Mode. Some configuration commands from this mode enter a command-specific mode and the prompt changes accordingly. For example the interface command enters interface configuration mode as shown below:

ciscoasa(config)# interface GigabitEthernet0/1

ciscoasa(config-if)# <-- Configure Interface specific parameters

The Unofficial Cisco ASA blog provides technical information and configuration examples about Cisco ASA 5500 Firewalls.

What safety measures have you taken to make sure the security of your precious data stored on your computer’s hard drive? There are several safeguards which you should always apply to your computer to make your data safe.

You must be thinking that using a firewall or an anti virus software is enough? Think again! Firewall and anti-virus software are just the tip of iceberg! This software can only prevent viruses from affecting your computer but could not recover your lost data.

Always bear in mind that being connected with the Internet is a bit like faltering down a dark alley wearing a shiny gold Rolex and you are drunk. There are several malicious programs present over there which could harshly affect your computer and could cause data loss.

Though, the anti virus software and firewall could stop viruses from entering into your system but they can not revert your data if the system has got affected and the data has got lost.

For making your data safe enough to handle any data loss situation, it becomes mandatory to backup your precious data to a safe location. The data backup could be made to a local hard drive, external hard drive or to a remote location on network or Internet.

To ensure complete data security, it is required to make regular data backup. You should always backup your most important data, without which your business can not proceed.

The backup can be made automatic using the data backup software, available in the market. These software are fairly easy to use and run into the background without affecting the general computing process.

Data backup is the best way to go for ensuring complete security of your data but unfortunately there are some computer users who don’t understand the need to backup, some due to extra faith in their computers and some due to lack of time. Whatever the reason may be, the results will the regret and loss of business in the data loss strikes.

But nothing is incurable and the solutions are available for handling these cases also. You can recover your precious data if you have deleted it accidentally, mistakenly formatted the hard drive, virus has attacked your computer and many alike.

The data recovery solutions, applicable in these cases, are known as data recovery software. the data recovery software are the third party hard drive recovery applications which could recover your precious data in an easy and straightforward way.

Stellar Information Systems Ltd is the most excellent and leading provider of data recovery software solutions. The data recovery software are available for all computer operating systems including Windows, Macintosh, Unix, Linux and Novell.

These data recovery software are fairly easy to use with their interactive and simple user interface with rich graphical support.

Have you heard about that new virus that just came out but you’re not worried because you have a firewall? A common misconception among computer users is that firewalls block viruses. But here is the scary news…they don’t!

A firewall is software-based or hardware-based protection that blocks malicious attacks on your computer from coming through over the internet. But don’t viruses come over the internet so a firewall should block them, correct? You’re right, but the difference is that viruses and spyware infect your computer by human interaction done on your part. Meaning, you might view an infected picture or visit a bad website, or open up an infected email for example. Anti-virus software protects you from these situations, but not a firewall.

So what is a firewall you ask? Computers have ports that they can communicate through…65,535 to be exact. A firewall will block communication to every one of those ports except the ones you specify it unblock. For example, if you connect to your company VPN from on your computer, you would only need port 1723 unblocked. By blocking all ports but port 1723, a hacker only has 1 port to try to hack through instead of trying to hack 65,535 ports. This just made his job MUCH harder!

The good news is with today’s technology you probably already have a firewall protecting your computer. Most routers (either wired or wireless) that connect to your broadband modem come with a firewall. By default, routers have the firewall turned on, but check the router settings to make sure it is currently protecting your network. If it’s not enabled, enable it and then specify the ports you want to have open.

What if you don’t have a router? In Windows XP and Windows Vista, they both come with a software firewall installed. Software firewalls do the same thing as hardware firewalls but may not have the advanced features such as logging activity or notifying you if it suspects harmful activity. However, software firewalls are better than no firewall at all

.

I’ll install several firewalls on my computer so I’m protected better!! This is a myth and is not correct. As I previously stated, firewalls close all ports but ones you specify, adding another firewall to your network just means you have to specify on that firewall the ports you need open. So two firewalls doing the same thing will not protect you any better but just slow down your network since data being transmitted through your network is having to be looked at by both firewalls, therefore I highly recommend you make sure your not running two or more firewalls.

While I prefer hardware based firewalls because of the advanced features they have, I have seen some very good software based firewalls. Hardware firewalls I prefer are WatchGuard, SonicWALL, Untangle, Check Point and Netgear. While software firewalls I recommend are ZoneAlarm, Norton and McAfee. No matter who you choose, you can rest assured that you’re making the life of a hacker a lot harder!

If you would like some help on installing a firewall, be sure to check out Fast Support Online

How to Choose a Firewall: Tips and Tricks for the Savvy User Without a firewall, your computer is opened up your computer to a host of attacks from hackers. These online criminals try to access your computer to change or steal your private information. With this information, the hacker can steal your identity, or access and use money from your bank account or credit cards. The past few years have seen a boom in ID theft, and a corresponding boom in industries, such as firewall, working to combat identity theft. It is predicted that firewall sales will come to 3.7 billion USD in 2007 (from itnews.com). With all the choices out there, how do you determine the best one?Choosing Wisely There are four main things a good firewall needs to supply. It needs to have good features, be easy to use, be reliable, and have technical support and updates available.Features to look for are the ability to block cookies, websites, browser history logs, and other undesirable things. Blocking these decreases your susceptibility to viruses and attacks. Individual settings are a plus, because you could visit some sites that your children cannot, or limit their time differently than yours.Ease of use means the firewall is simple. Not only is it intuitive, but it should customize itself to your computer through its preset defaults. Installation should be quick and straightforward.Reliable software responds correctly to unknown information. By responding correctly, it will keep harmful software, such as Trojans, out. These things coming in could cause your computer to automatically restart or shut off, losing any of your unsaved data.Technical Support is preferably free, and should be over either the phone or the internet. Upgrades should be simple to find and use, sometimes automatic.Top 2 personal firewall software programs to consider. Learn as much about the firewall software as possible before you buy. Check for online reviews and forum posts. Ask around to see if your friends or family has used the software you are considering, and see what their opinion of it is. Act quickly, as you never know how much of your information is already in jeopardy.

Right now, at this point, you probably already know the urgency of antivirus software to guard your PC. But to decide which product best suits your needs is a whole different matter. And among so many alternatives being offered all with perplexing technical information, you need to be alert not to fall for the useless ones. In order for you to do some effective comparison, here we list 8 tips when doing an antivirus software comparison.

1. Effectiveness

Figure out how effective the software you are by checking what threats it can eliminate. In this fast moving field of antivirus and antispyware, you want to know which product is able to cope with the latest versions of computer threats. Yes, it is a basic recommendation to have an antivirus with virus, worm, and trojan protection. But if you frequently bank and shop online, you need a software that can protect your sensitive data from being stolen. I addition, you might consider new technology like the one offered by AVG with its IDP (Identity Protection). This technology promises that it can learn the behavior of new threats without ever needs a signature update. Although it is still new, it looks promising.

2. User friendly (Easy to use)

See whether the product provides an easy to use interface and also whether it comes with a manual or user guide. It is important because even though the software provide with complete features and breakthrough technologies, but if the customization buried deep beneath a pile of complex menus and settings, it is not worth the try.

3. Virus definition and scanning engine updates

As new type of viruses and other malicious software keeps mutate in an alarming rate every day, it is mandatory that a good antivirus software offers a routine virus definition and scanning engine update. For virus definition, daily update has become a general requirement these days. So check if the software offers daily update.

4. Real-time Scanning

Using a product that provides ‘real-time scanning’ means that a virus or other malicious software will be automatically detected as soon as it tries to get onto your system. And it will continue run in the background to keep you safe from any threat.

5. System resources consumption

Regarding its vigorous and extensive activity in the background when running real-time scanning, it is better for you to find an antivirus that has low-impact on system resources. Because noticeably, some products may slow down your general computer processes.

6. Know Your Needs

Nowadays, antivirus vendors usually offer various type suite of protection. From basic product that offers protection against viruses, worms, and trojans to the all-in-one security solution that offers protection against all malicious software there are. Not only that, some product even offer online data backup and even PC tune up. But of course the more features a product offers, the more expensive it will be. So the key here is to know exactly what is your need. If you’re computer are rarely online, then even the free basic antivirus can accommodate your security need. I recommend AVG Antivirus (Free Version)for this. But if you online all the time and do business with it like banking or shopping, then an internet security suite is a must.

7. Technical support

Find out what kind of supporting services it provides, such as a live chat service, 24/7 call service, or even remote assistance. It is important, because in case the software miss one threat that make problems to your computer (yes, nothing’s perfect),you could get help in no time. Or it could be useful when you want to ask about customizing the software to be more-suited your needs.

8. Have a taste before you make a purchase

You should test for yourself whether or not the antivirus of your choice meet their promises. Furthermore, what might seems good to someone, does not necessarily feel quite good for the other. So this is why you should test it out first. And fortunately nowadays, most of antivirus vendors offer trial version of all their security software. These trial software usually have 30 days limited time. But it is enough for you to make a decision.

Now you can make a comparison based on these 8 simple tips I have discussed. Comparing price is logical, but when it comes to choosing antivirus software, it is not just about the price. But one thing to remember is that the more expensive a product is does not necessarily mean better.

Find more antivirus and anti malware tips including product recommendation on PC Software Adviser.com

Cyberspace today is attacked by viruses, spams, trogon, spy wares etc with the main purpose of causing trouble to the internet users. The internet users thus feel very insecure and are always in a fear against this software’s, which enters the operating system or the mailbox without the permission of the user. The need for updated and efficient spam blockers, firewall spam’s, anti virus solutions and pop-up blockers are very important to ensure security and protection against these hawkers. Newer and powerful spam removers are programmed to keep the spam mails at bay, but still they only filter spam.

Just like the firewall setting in the computer blocks insecure and doubtful web sites a firewall spam is also discovered to completely block spam mails from reaching the users mailbox. Spam mails are sent mainly for commercial purposes. But they might also carry deadly viruses and spy wares, which might cause your system to breakdown, or help, transform highly secured information from your computer to someone outside who might misuse they personal information.

Spam’s are sent to mass email ids which the hawkers receive from various means. Most of them are useless advertisements and irrelevant commercials. Whether they are relevant, or dangerous they need to be addressed in time with a firewall spam and should be kept off as it will save a lot of your precious time. Anti exchange server spam are also useful to firewall spam and protect and keep off spam. These anti spam application are available as free wares also. But if the utility is needed for a wider concern like a business environment then it’s always good to purchase professional software’s from expert companies who specifically deal with these software’s.

Firewall spam can protect and stop mails which do not belong to your contact list. They are also more efficient than general anti spam software’s which just filters the spam. But the firewall spam application is much more powerful as it blocks or stops spam mails and allow only real mails into the mail box. These applications might even pick up spam from the mails which you might have accidentally addressed as relevant. New updated firewall spam is definitely a safe and secured way to protect your computer and your mailbox from the irrelevant spams. So without wasting your more time, give your inbox a firewall spam protection by downloading it free from the internet. So get up and hurry!

There are two types of firewall available to the home computer user. A hardware firewall is a device which sits between your computer and the internet. At home for example it could reside on a broadband router which is used to share your internet connection with a number of computers. One of the advantages of a hardware firewall is that it can be used to protect more than one computer at a time. For this reason hardware firewalls are deployed in corporate networks. For home users who own just one computer a personal firewall is more commonly used and more cost effective.

A personal firewall is a software application that monitors and can block the flow of data between the internet and your computer. The firewall is a key part of your computer security set up. It prevents hackers from gaining access to your computer using an internet connection.

Hackers gain access to your computer through open ports that are used by your computer to communicate with the internet. The most basic firewall programs, like Windows XP’s firewall, monitor and can block “inbound” traffic by closing these ports. If theses ports are closed a hacker cannot access your computer directly via the internet.

More advanced firewall programs like products from ZoneLabs or Symantec also monitor and can block “outbound” traffic. This extra level of security is important and is worth investing in. For example, if malicious software like a Trojan Virus or spyware were installed on your computer without your knowledge the firewall would alert the user when it tried to connect to the internet and prevent it communicating with its host.

A firewall usually works at two basic levels. Firstly, packets of data are analysed based upon IP address and content to see whether they comply with a set of rules which a user can input to. The second level the data is analysed is at the application level. The firewall determines whether an application can send and/or receive data and the port which it should be communicating through.

The firewall “learns” through continuous interaction with the user. It seeks user approval from programs when they first come in to contact with the firewall. Most firewalls also allow the user to allow or block applications through a stored list of program which can be accessed through the firewall’s user interface.

There are a number of sites which will help test your firewall’s effectiveness. A number of these sites are run by security software vendors so it is recommended you test using an independently run site to double-check any results. One of the best independent test sites is run by The Gibson Research Corporation. They offer a free test called “Shield Up!” which can be found at their website – http://www.grc.com. The test checks a number of well-know and vulnerable ports on your computer and then provides some useful additional information to help improve your security while online.

It is important to remember that the firewall is only part of your computer security and does not negate the need for a good anti virus solution, a spyware removal tool and a degree of caution / common on sense on the type of websites a user visits. For example, the firewall will not scan for viruses or remove them from your computer.

Entensys Corporation – an International security software vendor, announced the release of UserGate Proxy & Firewall 5.0, which offers centralized management of networks and protection from complex Internet threats. UserGate now enables System Administrators to control their employees’ browsing habits and to monitor downloads in real-time. UserGate server can help boost employee productivity by giving you total control over what your employees can browse and what files they can download in real-time.

Complete Internet access control is achieved through web categorizations and web filtering techniques. BrightCloud Service and the BrightCloud Master Database are now included in UserGate and they have the largest, most accurate categorized URL database in the world.

This lets you control what sites your users can browse and lets you block access to websites that fall in particular categories, such as adult, online gaming, personal email, P2P and other work-unrelated resources. UserGate also allows you to monitor user downloads in real-time, letting you block specific file-types, such as mp3, mpeg, exe, zip, etc. It also scans all files for viruses and other malware using multiple anti-virus engines such as Panda and Kaspersky. This radically decreases the time to obtain virus signatures, thereby reducing the possibility of infection. UserGate even reduces the risk of social engineering by blocking access to phishing websites through the use of an auto-updatable database of phishing URLs.

“We examined all the recent IT trends and implemented each one that brought the slightest improvement to UserGate’s already very advanced protection, ease of use, and blazingly fast, security-enhanced Web access”, says Alexander Levchenko, President of Entensys Corporation. “We at Entensys are extremely proud of this release.”

UserGate Proxy & Firewall 5.0 includes multiple security features integrated into one complete solution. Features such as its dynamic traffic management system (Bandwidth Manager) that lets you specify a maximum amount of traffic for both directions (to and from your network or each computer on your network), a warning system of alert messages generated by UserGate server in response to virus detection, external attacks, virus definition file updates, and other server events. An Application Firewall is also implemented to manage Internet-based software at the client side with a detailed Web Statistics module and many other advanced capabilities.

Key Product Features

UserGate Proxy & Firewall 5.0 is a security solution that provides comprehensive protection by combining essential network security functions. UserGate now includes:

· Application Firewall – integrated module that enables the management of Internet-based applications, including the setting of restrictions on application usage per version/type/protocol and/or name.

· Dual Antivirus Engines – Panda Security and Kaspersky Lab engines filter mail, FTP and HTTP traffic for viruses to protect your network.

· Categorized URL Filtering – Includes BrightCloud URL filtering that restricts access to specific Web site categories that are generally not pertinent to a company’s use of the Internet.

· Alert Manager – is a warning system of alert messages generated by UserGate server in response to virus detections, external attacks, virus definition file updates and other server events.

· Bandwidth Manager – A dynamic traffic management system that uses simulation models combined with real-time traffic and origin/destination information to predict the effects of various management strategies, thus allowing more effective management and providing better traffic information than is currently possible.

· Web Statistics module – reporting, enables complete access to users’ statistics of their Internet browsers.

About Entensys

Entensys is an International security software vendor and developer of Internet connection sharing and firewall products that have a clear, easy-to-use administrative interface and multifunctional services.
